Metropolis II Kinetic Sculpture

Metropolis II, a kinetic sculpture created by Chris Burden, is currently showing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

Steel beams form an eclectic grid interwoven with an elaborate system of 18 roadways, including one 6 lane freeway, and HO scale train tracks… According to Burden, “The noise, the continuous flow of the trains, and the speeding toy cars, produces in the viewer the stress of living in a dynamic, active and bustling 21st Century city.”

LACMA’s blog gives some detail : 

- The cars are attached by a small magnet to the conveyor belt that brings 

   them to the crest. 

- The only motorization of the cars is the conveyor belt to the top. 

- Once the cars cross over the crest and head downward, their entire 

  movement is by gravity. 

- They travel at a scale speed of 240 mph, plus or minus. 

- The tracks they take are Teflon coated to reduce friction. 

- The trains are out of the box electric train sets that run on electricity.

Lego Millennium Falcon Assembly

Francisco Prieto animates the assembly of a Lego Millennium Falcon, Lego set 10179 from Star Wars Ultimate collector series. He writes: “Created using 3ds max and V-ray. A very long work over 3 years, modeling all the pieces by myself. and rendered frame by frame.”

The Science Of Glow Sticks

The first 3/4 of the video are a chemistry experiment breakdown of what goes into a glow stick and what each of those ingredients is meant to do. But at the end, all of this coalesces into a fine explanation of the difference between light-absorbing dyes and fluorescent dyes. Disney/Pixar's next big animated film due to hit UK cinemas on 17 August. Interactive Puppet

Puppet Parade is an interactive installation that allows children to use their arms to puppeteer larger than life creatures projected on the wall in front of them. Children can also step in to the environment and interact with the puppets directly, petting them or making food for them to eat. This dual interactive setup allows children to perform alongside the puppets, blurring the line between the 'audience' and the puppeteers and creating an endlessly playful dialogue between the children in the space and the children puppeteering the creatures.

Out of Sight

So this is a year old, but it’s still wonderful, and I can’t believe it’s slipped through my posting schedule. A trio of Taiwanese students made these as part of their graduation project. Their making-of page is worth looking at, even though the text is all in Mandarin and a simple Google translate of the page isn’t doing a decent job at all. It’s one of the most moving piece of animation I have seen lately … if you’re not touched by this, you may be made of wood!

Melvin the Machine by HeyHeyHey

Dutch design studio HeyHeyHey originally constructed the machine, named Melvin, during Dutch Design Week 2010 but reassembled this improved version a year later. Melvin the Magical Mixed Media Machine (or just Melvin the Machine) is best described as a Rube Goldberg machine with a twist. Besides doing what Rube Goldberg machines do best – performing a simple task as inefficiently as possible, often in the form of a chain reaction – Melvin has an identity. Actually, the only purpose of this machine is promoting its own identity!

Teach Respect to Children - United Against Prejudice and Discrimination

Every child has the right to be safe and free from prejudice and discrimination. Sometimes, however, children themselves unknowingly discriminate against other children basing their prejudices on race, religion, social class, colour, gender, background, obesity, disability, HIV status or other personal characteristics.

Name calling, poking fun, mimicry or not playing with someone because she or he is different are some of the ways children discriminate against their peers. Such behaviors can lead to stigma and social exclusion for many children. Worse, it can also result in abuse, harassment and bullying.

Non-discrimination is crucial to secure a child’s fundamental rights and freedoms. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, a legal treaty which Malaysia ratified in 1995, upholds that no child should be the victim of discriminatory acts; and that children are equally responsible for respecting these rights.

As a society, we must help our children develop positive attitudes. The responsibility to protect children from all forms of discrimination, prejudice and abuse, including bullying, is the responsibility of parents, teachers, and other adults in the community who are in contact with children.

Teach Respect, in honour of Universal Children’s Day on 20 November, aims to empower adults and children alike to promote fairness, empathy and mutual respect in their communities.

A 2,000 feet long powered Hot Wheels track that goes up and down the stairs, through 14 rooms of a house, around the outside of the house, and a jump over a hot tub.

Time Lapse - Landscape Vol 1 & 2

A year's compilation of Dustin Farell time lapse work. All shot on the Canon 5D2 and processed in Adobe After Effects. The majority of the shots are in his beautiful home state of Arizona. Goblin Valley State Park and Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah also make an appearance. Every clip is a RAW image sequence (5616 x 3744) that he rendered out as a 1080P 23.976fps Quick Time movie. The motion control is achieved using servo motors.
